As the Singapore diving team gears up for the upcoming SEA games, the 5th AASF Asian Diving Cup served as a platform for them to gauge their standard against tough regional competitors.
Held at the Toa Payoh Swimming Complex from 13-15 September, the professional diving event is held for the first time in Singapore. Apart from our local divers, regional participation included divers from Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong, China. The competition featured a total of eight categories, such as the Synchronized 10m Platform, Synchronized 3m Platform, Individual 10m Platform and Individual 10m Platform for both men’s and women’s.
Adding to Medal Tally
The Singapore diving team sent a total of six divers to take part in the event, including twin brothers Mark and Timothy Lee, Kimberly Chan, Arizir Fong, Myra Lee, Jonathan Chan and Fong Kay Yian. Sharing a combined haul of three bronze and three silver medals at the 1st SEA Swimming Championships 2012, these student athletes were looking to add to their tally.
The Singapore team concluded the AASF 5th Asian Diving Cup with a number of podium finishes, paving the way to success as the team trains towards greater achievements and goals at the SEA Games 2013. Fong Kay Yian who took home the gold medal for the Women’s Individual 3m Platform finals, Mark and Timothy Lee placed second in the Men’s Synchronised 3m Platform and Men’s Synchronised 10m Platform finals, and Kimberly Chan and Arizir Fong placed third in the Women’s Synchronised 10m Platform finals.
In addition, the Women’s team for Synchronised 3m Platform by Fong Kay Yian and Myra Lee, together with Jonathan Chan for Men’s Individual 10m Platform, also managed to clinch silver finishes for their events. The total medal tally for Team Singapore is one gold, four silvers and one bronze.
The Malaysia diving team, in particular, displayed great showmanship and team spirit as they bagged a total of five golds and two silvers at the event, putting the rest of their competitors behind them. In the Men’s Synchronised 10m Platform event, the team took home the gold medal finish with more than 50 points lead ahead of second-placed Singapore. All eyes were on Muhammad Nazreen from the Malaysian diving team as well; the petite 15-year old boy came in first for the Men’s Individual 10m Platform finals against competitors who were much older than him.
“It’s good to compete with some of the teams that are competing in the upcoming SEA games so we’re able to gauge some of their standards and train hard to work towards matching up with them!” said Timothy Lee.
The Singapore team would definitely have eyes on a podium finish during the 2013 SEA games. With the games just right around the corner, the national divers are sure to be stepping up their training sessions and working towards their SEA games ambitions. Only time will tell who will emerge victorious when the SEA Games 2013 kicks off on 11 December.
